crafts: Tissue Paper Stained Glass – Butterfly

Monday, July 16, 2012 17 Comments

Let’s do some stained glass today – kiddo style – with tissue paper!

Since we really can’t arrange small pieces of glass to form patterns or pictures for this project, you know, because this is kiddo style and all – let’s use another form, tissue paper.  This is a really simple activity and doesn’t require much to make it happen.  I’ve also included a free printable to make 2 butterflies :)

This is what you will need:

  • the printable below
  • laminator
  • scissors
  • X-ACTO knife
  • clear contact paper
  • tissue paper
  • double stick tape

This is what you will need to do to make them:

  1. print out the butterfly printable
  2. laminate the printable (you don’t necessarily have to laminate it; I just wanted it a little sturdier for hanging)
  3. cut small squares of tissue paper (the sizes don’t need to be exact, and the squares don’t need to be perfect, it looks better messy)
  4. using the printable, cut on the line between the butterflies with scissors, separating them
  5. using the X-ACTO knife, cut out the center grey butterfly shapes (like the pic)
  6. cut out 2 squares of contact paper for each butterfly square, matching the individual square sizes
  7. remove the backing and place 1 square of contact paper on one side of the butterfly square (the empty butterfly center will be sticky)
  8. now you are ready for the “kiddo part” :)
  9. have the kiddos stick the tissue paper squares on the exposed contact paper in any fun way they want – they can stick them one by one or they dump the entire bowl on top :)
  10. next shake off any loose tissue paper pieces
  11. seal off back to contain tissue paper squares with 2nd piece of contact paper
  12. using double stick tape – add to your window :)

What a great project! I love that you included the printable so that everyone can try it out. I look forward to trying this with the babies when they are a little bigger. I just got a laminator and I enjoy it so much. I imagine you could laminate it after they decorate it too so you could keep it long-term. Thanks for linking to Artsy Play Wednesday on Capri + 3.

So pretty. We did this in art class in junior high. I made a horse with his head sticking out a barn door. And I loved it. Thanks so much for sharing this at the All Star Block Party!

When your friend loves science just as much as you When your friend loves science just as much as you do.

These two... I couldn’t get them to walk away from our science table.

🐚🌊☀️When we went to the beach last week, V found this spiral thingee (official term 😆) way far back on the sand, near the dunes... it had obviously washed up a long time ago. She brought it to us & my mom (PHD science professor-lol good to have one of those in your back pocket, huh?!) identified it as a Whelk Egg Casing.

🔍🧐 🐚After Googling, based on the details of the casing, we determined it is an egg casing from a Knobbed Welk.

🐚🔍🕵🏼‍♀️Whelk eggs are fertilized internally and laid in capsule packets. Strings of these connected egg capsules are usually one to three feet in length, comprised of up to 160 capsules, and each casing containing 40-100 eggs. These eggs are SUPER TINY - ALREADY FORMED - LITTLE BABY SHELLS (swipe to the last shot)!!! The mother whelk anchors one end of the string onto rocks, shells, or sand on the sea floor for safety. Apparently, only about one percent will hatch successfully. If they emerge successfully from the egg case, they can expect to live for about 10 to 15 years if they reach maturity.

Pretty cool huh?! #youlearnsomethingneweveryday

Loose Parts Tray 🔩⚙️🗝 We’ve had this Loose Parts Tray 🔩⚙️🗝

We’ve had this loose parts tray since my kids were wee little ones and it is still utilized to this day. I just happened to catch a kiddo mid-way through mandala making today.

🌀💠🔆You can theme it out however you want - nature parts, color parts... think beads, buttons, bits & bobs... take a stroll down the small parts aisle at the craft store or your local hardware store to find some inspiration.

🖇📏🧮 I love how loose part trays allow open-ended creative play. Kiddos can explore the different textures and shape concepts in the tray to create structures, free play, or even work on math!

💡What would you use your loose parts tray for?
