fun eats: Dinosaur Rice Krispie Treats

Monday, July 23, 2012 19 Comments

So, we still have the dinosaurs roaming around our house…no extinction yet ;)

Today we are headed on over to the snack arena to make some fun dino-rrific rice krispie treats!

Yippee Ki Yay!  I mean…RAWR!

P.S. As I write this post…ummm, yeah, they are already all gone and I just made them today! :(

We are basically following the package recipe (the one on the Rice Krispie box) for Rice Krispie Treats, but with a few twists & turns :)

As you will see below, I also used a jellyroll pan instead of the traditional pan it calls for.  This was important for the thickness; I didn’t want them too thick for the cutters.  As you can probably guess, the sandwich cutters worked better than the cookie cutters.  The sandwich cutter shape is bolder with less detail than the cookie cutter, creating better dinosaur shapes.  With the sandwich cutters, I was able to cut out the dinosaur shapes closer together and waste less krispie treats.

Here we go, ya ready?

Ingredients/Tools

  • 3 TBSP butter or margarine
  • 1 10oz. package marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • green food coloring
  • cooking spray
  • large saucepan
  • wooden spoon
  • spatula
  • dinosaur sandwich cutters & cookie cutters
  • jellyroll pan
  • wax paper

Directions

  1. In the large saucepan melt butter/margarine over low heat.
  2. Add marshmallows and stir with wooden spoon until completely melted.
  3. Stir in desired amount of green food coloring; Remove from heat.
  4. Add Rice Krispies cereal; Stir until well coated.
  5. Spray spatula with cooking spray.
  6. Line a jellyroll pan with wax paper & spray with cooking spray.
  7. Using sprayed spatula, spread & press mixture into wax paper lined jellyroll pan.
  8. Allow to cool for about 15 minutes.
  9. Using dinosaur cutters, cut out desired dino shapes.
  10. Eat! :)
