Inspired by Eric Litwin – Button Counting, Graphing, and Sorting

Inspired by Pete The Cat - Button Counting, Graphing, and Sorting with FREE PRINTABLE! | @mamamissblog ‪#‎vbcforkids‬ #bookactivities

It’s another month, and another author for Virtual Book Club For Kids!

Last month we did a Fancy Stick Crown, from our favorite Julia Donaldson book –  Stick Man!

September we did a Pigeon Handprint Craft, Inspired By Mo Willems – Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus.

Today we are counting with Pete the Cat!

We read Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin.

Anywho – I created a SUPER SIMPLE extension activity to go along with the book, Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, a button rhyming & counting book that is so fun to read – and (spoiler alert) there is a belly button involved – ha-ha one of those super silly words that kiddos find HIL-arious!

“BELLY BUTTON”

he-he!

I furthered the counting & button fun (after the giggles commenced) by creating a Button Counting, Graphing, and Sorting activity.

This activity is so very simple (only requires the printable & some buttons), that we brought it over to our neighbors house and got our math & reading on over there!

I say it’s more fun to read & count with friends, don’t you?!

We counted.

We sorting & graphed by size and shape.

Then we graphed & sorted by color.

There are limitless ways to learn with this simple activity.

  • counting
  • sorting by size
  • sorting by shape
  • sorting by color

With this activity they worked on…

  • color hues – the buttons varying only in color can be sorted and classified by color.
  • sizing – the buttons varying only in size can be sorted and classified from smallest to largest or vice versa.
  • different/same – the buttons varying in size & color can be sorted and classified by their sameness & differences.
  • counting – by added a number card, they are learning the visual recognition of the number in words (the number card) & then counting it out in a tangible object (the buttons), therefore assimilating the two together (great for all you visual learners!)
  • symmetry – by lining up the buttons on the dots they are creating symmetry – symmetry in color, size, or shape.

Such a super simple activity that has a multitude of ways to learn!

So let’s make it happen!  What you’ll need are:

  • The book – Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons
  • The buttons – Assorted Size Buttons
  • The printable – the super simple printable I created

Now you’re all set! :)

We would love for you to come join us in all the fun!!!

See the whole 2014-2015 line up here.

Have you created an activity inspired by Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons?

Tell us what you did here in the COMMENTS or over on the Virtual Book Club for Kids Facebook page where we will be featuring each month our book related ideas!

When your friend loves science just as much as you When your friend loves science just as much as you do.
🔬🧫👩🏼‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬
These two... I couldn’t get them to walk away from our science table.

🐚🌊☀️When we went to the beach last week, V found this spiral thingee (official term 😆) way far back on the sand, near the dunes... it had obviously washed up a long time ago. She brought it to us & my mom (PHD science professor-lol good to have one of those in your back pocket, huh?!) identified it as a Whelk Egg Casing.

🔍🧐 🐚After Googling, based on the details of the casing, we determined it is an egg casing from a Knobbed Welk.

🐚🔍🕵🏼‍♀️Whelk eggs are fertilized internally and laid in capsule packets. Strings of these connected egg capsules are usually one to three feet in length, comprised of up to 160 capsules, and each casing containing 40-100 eggs. These eggs are SUPER TINY - ALREADY FORMED - LITTLE BABY SHELLS (swipe to the last shot)!!! The mother whelk anchors one end of the string onto rocks, shells, or sand on the sea floor for safety. Apparently, only about one percent will hatch successfully. If they emerge successfully from the egg case, they can expect to live for about 10 to 15 years if they reach maturity.

Pretty cool huh?! #youlearnsomethingneweveryday

Loose Parts Tray 🔩⚙️🗝 We’ve had this Loose Parts Tray 🔩⚙️🗝

We’ve had this loose parts tray since my kids were wee little ones and it is still utilized to this day. I just happened to catch a kiddo mid-way through mandala making today.

🌀💠🔆You can theme it out however you want - nature parts, color parts... think beads, buttons, bits & bobs... take a stroll down the small parts aisle at the craft store or your local hardware store to find some inspiration.

🖇📏🧮 I love how loose part trays allow open-ended creative play. Kiddos can explore the different textures and shape concepts in the tray to create structures, free play, or even work on math!

💡What would you use your loose parts tray for?
